From Humble Beginnings to Tragedy, to Redemption

About Ed Roman

Ed Roman’s childhood dream was to enter the police force and serve his fellow citizens. That dream became a reality when he was sworn in as Los Angeles Sheriff’s Deputy in 1991. After twenty-five years of service across various positions within the department, Ed retired. During his career, he worked with some of the most notorious criminals in the country in Men’s Central Jail and Twin Towers, which are two of the facilities making up the largest county jail system in the U.S. As a national recruiter for the Sheriff’s Department, he has spoken at colleges, universities, high schools, and other venues on the value of police work as a calling and a duty. He also served as a community resources officer at Y.A.L, an after-school diversion program, inspiring teens to take up a career in law enforcement.

His deep experience in witnessing first-hand the effect childhood decisions have on men as adults serves as one of the subjects of this book. In addition, his passion for working with young people to give them a perspective, not only on the proper role of policing in our society but also on the choices they make and the influences they allow in their lives, makes him an electrifying speaker who holds the attention of audiences of all ages.

He is employed at the South Orange County Community College District and as a Reserve Deputy working with the Recruitment Unit in between speaking engagements. He is a highly motivating speaker and individual. He is an inspirational spokesman for responsible, compassionate, and effective policing and its value to the community’s well-being. He is also a passionate advocate for motivating youth to make the best choices for their lives, families, and communities.

Ed Roman grew up playing youth baseball in Southern California while dreaming of a life in law enforcement. He had no idea one day he would be dealing with the Mexican Mafia, the Bloods and Crips, O.J Simpson, the Menéndez brothers, and the many other hardened criminals as a deputy sheriff. By the Book, From the Book, is his inspirational story of twenty-five years as an L.A. County Sheriff’s Deputy.
